Fried plantains/gonja

Ingredients

  • 1/2 litre oil (enough for deep frying)
  • salt (enough to taste)
  • 4 ripe plantains
  • For: 4
  • Preparation: 10 min
  • Cooking: 20 min
  • Ready in: 30 min

Instructions

  1. Peel the very ripe plantains or "gonja" as these are called in many parts of UgandaPlantain/gonja
  2. Cut into thin slices and sprinkle some little salt evenly over them. In the meantime, heat some oil in a pan, enough for deep frying.
  3. Add portions of the plantains and let them get to golden brown.

Notes

These can be eaten as a snack or part of breakfast. In some parts of West Africa, they are mostly eaten as part of main meals. With less ripe plantains the taste can be varied further by adding some spices. Thinner slices are more likely to turn crispy to some sort of plantain or let me call them gonja chips. 😉 As you see, one can do more with gonja than steaming or roasting them. Have you tried something different with gonja or indeed some other dish? Share it!
